3.1 and 9 suck - wish I could go back in time. I know there are folks (Saurik and the Dev Team) working on solutions to this but I don't understand why Apple would care what I do with my phone - no other manufacturers seems to care. Windows Mobile devices are pretty much wide open from what I hear.

Since I downgraded to 3.1, I have considered looking at other phones. Simply not being able to multi-task and listen to Pandora while I text or surf blows.

Not to mention the dropped calls. I lose several a day - everyone I know with an Iphone has the same issue.

How is the coverage in your area? Are dropped calls common?

When I lived in on Long Island coverage was absolutely horrendous. A 5 minute call would get dropped at least twice.

Here in Dallas I think I've had a half dozen dropped calls in 2 years and they were all while speaking with people in NY.

So location, location, location.

In Portland AT&T service has deteriorated noticeably in recent months. 1 of every 10 calls gets dropped.

AT&T and the other major carriers are rushing to add 3G capacity and to start rolling out 4G/LTE. They see the growth in mobile traffic and know they need to get in front of it. I'm hopeful of an improvement in the coming year.

Tethering was disabled with the 3.1 update as well. Apple apparently took the feature out of ATT networked phones completely. Arg! And I needed it today.

Just bought my first IPhone today, a 3GS. My Verizon contract with a BB expired at midnight today. I've downloaded Iheartradio.com, the free level, the noise meter (paul von dunk), pocketdyno, my ipod music and pictures, a cool, sick game call maxinjury, and yelp. Gotta learn more tomorrow. I have to get my Disney email/calendar thing working.

Nice. I just heard today that Verizon will have the iPhone in Q3 2010. Can't wait....

HHI94411-08-2009 07:00 PM

That's awesome. I'll be eligible for a cheap upgrade (20 over the new contract price) at the beginning of Q4. I'd love to go back to an Apple product as long as they stop with the aggressive anti-jailbreak campaign.

Try Real Racing GTI -- good fun and free because VW is subsidizing it to promote the latest GTI. There is also a $6.99 "full version" that offers more track/car choices, but I'm too cheap to buy it so far . . .

Check out SimplifyMedia - it streams 100% of your music off of your PC over the cell phone network - you'll never download anything directly to the iPhone again. This is a killer app - now all they need to do is to stream video (like SlingBox) over the cellphone network.

ATT would go ballistic if someone got an app through to do this. There was a slingbox app for about a day and ATT got it axed.

I can't try my HAVA software on my Treo Pro on the AT&T network. It definitely will not work on T-Mobile EDGE. Works great on Wifi. Low res You-tube does work.

Thanks for the tip - my new favorite app. I won't be using Pandora much anymore.

This is a great app combined with Backgrounder (jailbreak app).

I don't know if they have been mentioned, but the apps I use most are Google Mobil (voice activated search), Sigalert (traffic update), Redfin (ever wonder what homes are going for in that neiborhood you're driving through?), Darkroom (waits till the camera is steady to shoot, no more blurry pics) and Sportacular (up to the minute scores for a large variety of sports). All are free but I paid for Sportacular to avoid ads.

porsche4life11-09-2009 07:26 AM

I haven't downloaded it but there is an ALMS app that gives you up to the minute leaderboards... I'll get it before the season starts next year. :D

Is there a Google-maps app for the iPhone? On WM, there is, and, at least here in Houston, the traffic color coding now covers more than just the Interstates. Many of the high usage surface streets are color coded (Green-Yellow-Red). Houston also has a system similar to "sig-alerts", but the Google-Maps application does a lot more. It is also cell tower & GPS aware, and has turn by turn navigation.

Cool, thanks Wayne, that may be just what I need, I have already almost filled my 16 Gb IPhone with music, and was thinking that I needed to offload some of it. My son pointed out that if I travel and listen to music for a few hours, my IPhone will be dead. Better to keep the IPod with me for music.

Just got back from a EU jaunt.

Battery lasted through entire flight. Several movies and tunes going pretty much the entire time.

I also have an external AAA powered recharger. Gives you 80% charge from almost dead. $29.

craigster5911-09-2009 08:56 AM

Another way to extend your charge is if you are in a wi-fi area (home/work) turn off your 3g and vica versa. Running both when you don't need to runs down the battery a lot quicker.

Turn off push if you don't need it.

Definitely turn it off when out of country or you'll come home to a nasty data bill.

Data in Germany was either $19 or $29 a MB.

Don't remember which, just remember getting the notification when I hit their network and being shocked.

It doesn't do that automatically? WM6 does.

It switches automatically. I assume the radios stay on regardless.

3g works great in the dallas area so my wifi is never enabled anyway.
